A few days ago Jessica and I bought a bird feeder, I am not real sure why we thought we needed to feed the neighborhood pigeons or those nasty grackles that seem to be everywhere. Honestly we are hoping to attract more song birds to the area. Well we strung up the bird feeder on a low limb in one of our backyard maple trees. The next morning we found the bird feeder on the ground. I suspect the squirrels as there were two of them enjoying the now ground level feast. The string looked like it had succumbed to something heavier than a bird. I put the bird feeder out of reach of the squirrels for a short time but after a rainstorm put it back in the sun to dry out.
Just yesterday I went out to mow the yard and felt obliged to "lock" William in the backyard while I mowed the front and side yards. I merely closed the gates on the fence around our house. I didn't lock the house however figuring he'd be okay inside if he went--assuming he didn't realize the garage was open and accessible from inside. Anyway, I came back to the backyard and found bird feeder contents all over the back patio. William was standing there surveying his artwork when I came in to the scene. He looked up at me as if to ask "What?" I told him to clean up the mess. I stopped the mower to go close the fence gate I had left open behind me and as I returned to the mower I looked over to see William bent over seeds spreading them around and saying "Tweet, Tweet, Come and eat!" Now my mind may have filled in the "and" but that little boy was calling the birds to come and feast. Of course with him there I doubt any deranged bird would have come down. He is more of a guard dog at times growling at anything that will cast a shadow.
This morning I was watching the news and heard William growling behind me and knocking on the window. I turned to see William attempting to scare away the squirrels who had returned to the ground-floor-feast.
William does have a sweet side too, especially for all things "baby" as he calls them. He recognizes size differences and will sweetly call out "baby" in a higher pitch and squint his eyes. The following shows him eating yogurt, one a baby bite and the other a big bite. He "hides" the bite and asks "Where'd it go" and then answers "tummy!"
